The Wizard Rockumentary (2008)

First off, me=HUGE Harry Potter fan. Since discovering the sub-fan-culture of wizard rock (original Harry Potter-inspired music), I’ve taken my nerdiness (or is it awesomeness?) to a whole new level.

In the spring of 2006, my twin sister Megan and I decided to shoot a feature-length documentary on the wizard rock phenomenon, the magic of reading, and the excitement within the Harry Potter fandom during the lead up to the release of Deathly Hallows, the final book in the Harry Potter series. The documentary, The Wizard Rockumentary: A Movie About Rocking and Rowling, premiered in April 2008 and has screened at theaters and libraries all across the US and internationally. It is now being distributed by Octapixx Worldwide.

“Ode to Harry” by Switchblade Kittens:

This is widely recognized to be the first ever wizard rock music video and, appropriately, “Ode to Harry” was also the first ever wizard rock song. The performance footage was shot in southern California on our trip to interview Switchblade Kittens (a.k.a. The Weird Sisters), while the rest was shot here in Spokane, at Gonzaga University. The Americanized, college-aged Harry Potter characters depicted were a hit with the fandom, but none more so than “bearded Ron.”
